This poem is (mostly) at a moment of dreams and hope, before the coming of shadows. When love feels as if it can win out, over a lifetime of pain and steal away all that she wished that she lost.

But, as is often the case: good things struggle to last. Shadows rise, hope runs out of wax and burns the hand that holds it, leaving the holder uncertain what to believe about the light that shone.

Fighting with the Shakespearean Sonnet form (I know I used it far from perfectly) gave me a great deal of trouble, but the nature of the form and the way it flows from point to counterpoint with a final 2 line ending that can speak to the transformation in between, as well as commonly being a poetic structure used in love situations, made it a perfect fit for this second part. Does it hold up? I am too close to it to know.

Found

Her pain fell away with each passing day
here amid the rivers where he held her.
She felt herself renewed from her decay
until she believed herself mostly cured

His strength flooded her with a new belief
in the beauty of the world beyond view
despite the sense of still lingering grief
that pushed against her needed renewal

But then the darkness came to call on him
and demand his fealty to shadow.
Instead he fled, left her to its dark whims,
a fate that would break her down to the marrow

Sinister gods rule here where she had fled
and would leave her broken ere fated end
