I had a week where I struggled with all of my writing. I’ve been trying to get a short story knocked out to keep working on my prose, and also been trying to write a new poem. Neither made much progress. Perhaps thinking about my novel is holding me back, but that is never enough of an excuse, and I am taking a few days off from it before beginning another edit anyway.

I decided to try and catch two foxes with one trap, so I thought about my story and sought to write an outline in poetic form. And so I spent some time hammering it out. The final story may have differences beyond being longer and prose, but the core of the story is there. And finding no other poem inside me when I searched this week, I’m posting it as my weekly entry.

Enid Upon the Glacier

Enid walked along the river’s path
Between the glacier and the stars
With her brother Fergus
Searching for the missing rain
To spare their people from the curse
Laid upon them by the goddess Danu
For daring to be free
And so they followed that river bed
To the glacial shore
Moving between the ice and snow
To the secret spring at the heart
Where sleeping Danu waited
Trapped in her own dream
Yearning to be free
And there Enid and Fergus faced
The spirits waiting in the cave
With a battle that lasted into the night
Until Fergus’s spear shattered in the cold
But as the spirits pressed the pair
Enid forged a spear of ice
To replace the broken weapon
And with magic brought to bear
They freed Danu from her dream
And spared their people from thirsty doom
